Nantucket House

After renting houses in Nantucket for many summers, our clients decided to do what they had long dreamed of—they built a house. A contractor had bought the lot, tore down a modest dwelling and made plans to build a much larger one. When the clients bought the property, the house that would be built on it was designed and had passed the Historical Commission's approval process which, apparently, is no mean feat. When we were brought on board, the exterior could not be changed, the interior was planned with a large central atrium and widow's walk, a surprisingly usual feature of houses on the island. That was our starting point.

We tweaked the plan, rearranging the stair to allow for more natural light. Outdoor living is an important aspect for the family, so we helped arrange the plan of the swimming pool, the pool house, the fireplace pavilion, and the pickle ball court.

While the house is traditional, as are most buildings in Nantucket, our clients were interested in a warm contemporary interior that would be a counterpoint to the exterior. The color palette is neutral, but the textures are exuberant: zigzag wood panels, reeded stone shower walls, brushed stone countertops, dual-glazed tile, chunky terrazzo. Subtle hits of color are evident in the pale blue marble fireplace surround, and the handmade backsplash tile and green-blue concrete counter in the outdoor kitchen.

We took a similar approach with the furniture and carpets by using shapes and textures in a natural palette. Luxurious materials like sheepskin, linen, and wool are in close colors. The walls behind the beds are upholstered. The decorative lighting throughout the house is special, sourced from companies like Apparatus, Bocci, Ochre, and Future Perfect.

The family is incredibly social. There are often house guests filling the many bedrooms. Afternoon parties begin with swimming and pickleball, move to the cabana for dinner and drinks, and end with lovely discussions around the large outdoor fireplace. The families dream accomplished? Check!
